The University of Connecticut Police Department is an internationally accredited law enforcement agency.


Victim Rights


The University of Connecticut Police Department is providing the public with access to information that as a victim/witness you are entitled to. All victims/witnesses of a crime that is reported to the University of Connecticut Police Department are provided with a card that lists services directly available to the University community members.

Victims/Witnesses have a right to:
  • Help in obtaining medical care
  • Be notified about arrests, arraignment and scheduled releases of offenders
  • Protection from employer harassment when under subpoena as a witness
  • Return of property taken by the police to investigate the crime
  • Obtaining information about services and agencies that help victims
  • Victims may request a protective order from the court
  • Victims may apply for financial assistance by calling 800-822-8428
Information for Family Violence victims:
  • Violence includes threats of violence
  • The police officer is responsible for deciding whether or not to make an arrest based on Connecticut General Statutes
  • Victims can file a complaint with the police and ask them to arrest the offender
  • The person arrested for a family violence crime must go to court the next available day
  • Courts have Family Violence Victim Advocates to give victims services and support. Courts also have Family Violence Intervention Units that evaluate cases and serve both the victims and the offenders
  • Victims can contact the Clerk of the Court to learn when the offender is scheduled to be in court
  • Victims can obtain a court order to stop further physical injury or harassment. To do this the victim should contact the Clerk of Civil Court, a Family Violence Advocate or an attorney
