Escort Service Policy

The Escort Service is provided by the UConn Police Department to all members of the university community with the intent to provide a SAFE escort. All employees are students who report to the Police Department Community Services Division Supervisor.

The service operates seven nights a week during the academic year from 5:00pm (6:00pm during daylight savings) until 2:00am Sunday through Wednesday and 5:00pm until 3:00am Thursday through Saturday.

The vans are responsible for escorts going to or from off campus and will provide rides to on campus escorts from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. At 8:00pm all on campus escort requests will be provided with a walking escort. (Most parking lots are considered on campus).

In the event of unsafe weather conditions for the walking escorts the vans will provide rides for on campus escorts. Vans may also provide rides on campus in the event that there are no walking escorts working that evening. If vans are not servicing off campus escorts they may be utilized to transport an occasional on campus escort, however, this will occur rarely due to the volume of off campus escorts given nightly. The Escort Service does not transport persons who have been drinking.

All persons requesting an escort must call 486-4809 and give their name to the dispatcher. Due to the large volume of van escorts no one will be picked up if they have not called for an escort. (Waiting times may vary depending on the number of calls and the locations of the escorts.)

At no time will an escort service van transport a sick or injured party but will refer this person to the Fire Department ambulance service. If a person should become ill while utilizing the escort service the dispatcher will notify the police department.

If an individual calls requesting a ride, and is unable to move by their own power (i.e. wheel chair, crutches, etc) we will refer the call to the Department of Transportation Handicapped Services (486-4991). The Escort Service vans are not equipped to provide this type of service.

Anyone with a comment or complaint in regards to the Escort Service may call the Community Services Division Supervisor Monday - Friday from 8am to 4pm at 486-4807.
